Our Home Learning Adventure

I truly believe that learning starts at birth and continues until the end. It is the most natural human endeavor, like love. In fact the two are so closely entwined! Freedom to explore and play, allowance to self-direct, and a wealth of exposure to all the wonders, minutae, and even ugliness of real life are what continue to nurture the drive and passion to learn that children are born with. What a joy it is to observe, participate and learn anew along with them!

Dancing

I can't explain what it's like to watch Daniel dancing.  Since his second year - I have a video of him filmed with his back to me, oblivious of my attention, doing a t least 5 different moves - I have realised how important dance is, at least to children, at least to my son.  Until Daniel was about 3.5, 4, he was pretty self-conscious about dancing with me, but then suddenly it took off.  Perhaps it was the costumes - Spiderman, ninja, and the freedom to stand on the top back of the couch and jump off, but he is now fully into intensely choreographed dance routines, replete with fantasy roles, slow and fast interpretations, stunts, and absolutely wonderful music appreciation.  Last summer, Daniel and Catriona worked on a dance together to some Mexican heavy rock-pop: Kinky's, "Presidente", including a whole story about rivals, with fake karate moves...sand so much more.  Since then, Daniel has taken it on himself to train and choreograph the members of our small home daycare in dance.   So far his greatets influences have been, Me: (ha ha) dancing while pregnant, the Ballet Swan Lake and Michael Jackson; and undoubtedly, music, dance and friends from his dad's / Mexican community.

Most importantly, is the time he spends alone doing this, the freedom he experiences, and as all those who love dance know, the release from life's stresses. Daniel's dance is theatrical, very phyiscal, emotional, precise and full of stunts, poses, intense interpretations.  He's so beautiful.
